Men and nature: rendez-vous with water |
|
 The adventure between Valais people and the natural elements has a long and rich history. The fight to control irrigation by farmers gave rise to numerous irrigation canals in the Valais canton. Built on hillsides or set in rock walls, these snakelike waterways trace a route along sheer cliffs, thread their way through vineyards or penetrate deep into the valley. Bordered by stony paths, these indefatigable guides will lead you to the most authentic sites, through larch forests or to the banks of wonderful small mountain lakes. At a bend in the route, you will perhaps notice the GRANDE DIXENCE, the world’s highest gravity dam, a masterpiece of engineering which rises to a height of 285m, holding back 400 million m3 of water ready to supply to the electricity generating plants. Lastly, not to be missed, the Saint-Léonard UNDERGROUND LAKE, Europe’s largest, a curiosity of international renown.

The Bisses |

| This system of irrigation was born of the determination of the farmers to eliminate the consequences of drought. It was therefore necessary to branch water from rivers and torrents, to deviate them artificially to irrigate land passing along the mountain sides, adapting the construction of these "canals" to the tormented relief, sometimes rocky, sometimes soft and crumbly. |

- Gouilles d'Essertze
2 km away from Thyon 2000, the swampy biotope of the "gouilles d’Essertse" covers a surface of about 5 ha. The zones of swamps and ponds are located between 2300 and 2500 m. The peat bog of the Grand Tsa, the highest of the Alps, benefits from an exceptional flora.

On the old Bisse of Chervé at about 1h10 on foot from Thyon 2000 towards the dam of Cleuson (near the Restaurant Les Chottes).

About 30 minutes from Thyon 2000, direction la Matze.
